Unprecedented court decision in hush money case

Donald Trump, soon to be sworn in for his second term as US president, has been spared jail time, probation, or fines despite being found guilty of falsifying business records in the Stormy Daniels hush money case. On Friday, a Manhattan court handed down an unconditional discharge, just days ahead of his inauguration on January 20.

The case revolved around allegations that Trump falsified business records to cover up a €120,000 payment to adult film star Stormy Daniels during his 2016 campaign. Daniels claims the payment was made to silence her about an alleged affair from a decade earlier—a claim Trump denies, insisting no sexual relationship occurred.

Appearing remotely before Judge Juan M. Merchan, Trump maintained his innocence. “This was a political witch hunt meant to damage my reputation and make me lose the election,” he stated, calling the conviction an unfair attack.

Despite facing 34 felony charges and a two-month trial, the case did little to hinder Trump’s political comeback. Voters overwhelmingly chose him for a second term, cementing his unprecedented return to the presidency.

Manhattan Judge Merchan had the option to sentence the 78-year-old to up to four years in prison. However, he opted for an unconditional discharge, sidestepping potential constitutional issues and ensuring Trump will become the first convicted felon to assume the presidency.

The trial brought sordid details to light, with prosecutors accusing Trump of orchestrating a scheme to conceal affair allegations. Yet, Trump argued the case was politically motivated.

“This has been a terrible experience,” Trump said during his sentencing, reiterating his claim of innocence.

The decision to avoid imposing a penalty underscores the historic nature of Trump’s case, marking a new chapter in the legal and political dynamics of the United States.

Trump’s legal and political Journey: A timeline leading to his sentencing

  • 2016 Campaign: Stormy Daniels alleges a payoff of €120,000 to suppress affair claims.
  • 2023 Trial: Trump faces 34 felony charges in a highly publicised trial.
  • 2024 Conviction: Convicted on all counts, he denies wrongdoing, citing political bias.
  • January 2025: Sentenced without penalty, Trump prepares to assume the presidency.

As Trump prepares for his second term, this legal case highlights the resilience of his political career and its ongoing controversies.
