The unbelievable new passenger jet plane is being developed by US start-up JetZero, together with NASA, the US Air Force, and the FAA. The new ‘blended wing’ plane promises to cut fuel use by 50% and reduce noise.
Can a plane be sexy? The answer is yes, of course it can. The groundbreaking plane, set to hit the skies by 2030, is inspired by a 100-year-old idea and could shake up the way we fly for good.
US start-up JetZero is working with the US Air Force, NASA and the FAA, to develop and release an ultra-efficient Blended Wing Body jet with unprecedented performance by 2030.
The jet, which uses a ‘blended wing’ design, will seamlessly merge its wings into the body, making it look unlike any aircraft we’ve seen before. This incredible concept could improve fuel efficiency by half while offering a quieter, smoother ride for passengers. The bold plan was unveiled by JetZero and Siemens during a press conference at CES 2025 in Las Vegas on January 8, instantly sending shockwaves through the aviation industry.
While the ‘blended wing’ idea isn’t new – it was first floated by Russian pilot Nicolas Woevodsky more than a century ago – it’s only now that it’s being seriously considered for commercial airliners. Until now, planes have stuck to the traditional tube-like fuselage with wings that don’t merge into the body. Why? Because the idea of switching to a brand-spanking new design has been seen as commercially risky. But with new technology, that could all change.
Blended-wing designs could slash fuel consumption and noise levels thanks to their higher lift-to-drag ratios and clever integration of noisy engines. The new plane will need a shorter, wider fuselage that blends with the wings to maximise lift. That means less surface area, less drag, and a significantly lighter plane – all of which allow for smaller engines. The result? More room for passengers, a smoother ride, and lower emissions.
And it doesn’t stop there. JetZero’s new plane will be fully compatible with sustainable aviation fuel and is even capable of running on hydrogen fuel, with the ultimate goal of flying with zero emissions. The jet will carry 250 passengers and boast an impressive range of 9,250 kilometres (5,750 miles), making it a serious contender for long-haul flights.
