In a twist that’s shocked the tech world, Google has slammed Microsoft for playing dirty tricks with its Windows users. They’ve issued a serious warning to all Windows users.

The tech titans are head-to-head in a war of wits, with Google accusing Microsoft of deceiving users right under their noses. A Google exec took to X (formerly Twitter) to cry foul: “New year, new low @Microsoft,” decrying a history of user confusion and limited choice.

Is Microsoft spoofing Google?

The scandal centres on Microsoft’s sneaky move on Bing.com. According to Windows Latest, if you search for ‘Google’ or ‘Google.com’ on Bing, you’re greeted by a giant animated celebration, a fake Google homepage complete with a search bar, doodle-like images and even some small text under the bar mimicking the real deal. This bold ruse aims to trap users and keep them away from the authentic Google search – a cheeky attempt that Google calls a ‘low blow.’

The backlash keeps coming for Microsoft

The Verge was quick to lambast the move, labelling it “a clear attempt from Microsoft to make Bing look like Google.” The spoof not only copies Google’s look but even goes the extra mile, automatically scrolling down to hide Bing’s own search bar. Parisa Tabriz, head of Google Chrome, fired back that while imitation may be flattery, this was a blatant trick to confuse users. “New year; new low @Microsoft,” she tweeted, echoing the outrage.

Microsoft’s nagging habits

This isn’t the first time Microsoft has been accused of sneaky tactics. Just last month, the tech giant faced heat for incessant nags to switch to its own browser, Edge, on Windows 11. Windows users reported relentless prompts to set Edge as their default, further fuelling suspicions of a broader scheme to push Microsoft’s own services over Google’s.

Why the feud?

Though Microsoft dominates the desktop OS market, it struggles to crack Google’s stronghold on search and browsers. Accusations fly that both giants leverage their dominant platforms to shove rival products out of the way. Each giant accuses the other of similar skullduggery, and the spat shows no sign of cooling down.

The drama between Google and Microsoft isn’t just a passing cloud; it’s a full-blown storm. While the world watches this digital duel, both companies are under pressure to defend their tactics. As this battle of wits rages on, one thing’s clear – when it comes to the tech world, the only thing predictable is unpredictability.
