Germany’s New Year’s Eve festivities exploded into disaster as fireworks killed five and sparked violent riots, leaving the nation reeling from one of its worst holiday seasons in recent memory.

A chaotic night saw over 400 people arrested in Berlin alone after attacks on police officers and a night of mayhem across several major cities. As the clock struck midnight, what should’ve been a moment of celebration turned into a nightmare.

Firework fatalities across Germany

Among the five lives lost was a 24-year-old in Geseke, North Rhine Westphalia, who tragically died after his homemade firework detonated prematurely. A 45-year-old and a 50-year-old also perished when fireworks exploded in their hands, while in Hamburg, a homemade firecracker claimed the life of a 20-year-old.

Riots erupt in Berlin

In the German capital, authorities were left scrambling as more than 400 people were arrested in the wake of violent clashes. Over 30 police officers and one firefighter sustained injuries, adding to the toll of this explosive night.

Firework fury sparks chaos

Hundreds of officers were called into Berlin to try and maintain control, but rioters proved relentless, with reports of police in Hamburg being “literally shot at” with fireworks. In Leipzig, it was described as an all-out war zone, with police pelted by fireworks and bottles from angry mobs.

German authorities lash out

The sheer violence shocked even the most battle-hardened officers. “It is unimaginable what our emergency forces had to experience on this New Year’s,” said Lars Wieg, chairman of Berlin’s police union.

In the wake of the bloodshed, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser condemned the riots, vowing to prosecute the culprits “with the utmost severity.” Berlin’s Mayor, Franziska Giffey, promised swift action, announcing plans for a “partial firework ban” in the coming weeks. It’s a move that many have been calling for, especially following repeated attacks on emergency services during past New Year’s celebrations.

Germany in crisis

With fireworks permitted only for a few hours each year, this year’s chaos has sparked fresh debates. Just days before the celebrations, both police and firefighter unions called for a nationwide ban on private fireworks after previous years’ attacks. The horrific scenes in 2025 only add weight to their argument.

As Germany struggles to come to terms with the carnage, many are asking whether the tradition is too much of a risk.
