Cinematic continuity be damned, Jason Momoa is putting the fish gills down for tattoos and violence. According to reports from Deadline, the man known around the world as Aquaman formally announced his return to the DC universe as the invulnerable Lobo in Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.
For those unaware of the terrifying force that is Lobo, just know he’s an intergalactic bounty hunter who causes genocides for fun and once bragged about killing Santa Claus. Lobo has had his fair share of brutal encounters with Supergirl’s cousin Superman in the comics, so the two of them were bound to collide sooner or later. In an Instagram post, Momoa shared a quote from his 2023 Fandango interview in which he revealed that the long-haired, muscular menace was his favorite comic book character growing up, calling it “the perfect role.” He confirmed his involvement in the movie with a simple two-word caption: “They called.”
Details of the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow film are still under wraps outside of its June 26, 2026 release date and House of the Dragon’s Milly Alcock being cast as the lead. That would make it the second movie in James Gunn’s new DC Universe, with Gunn’s highly anticipated Superman as the first. That one’s slated to arrive on July 11, 2025.
It would be pretty funny if Gunn’s new DC cinematic universe also ends up including a Justice League. If so, would Momoa pull double duty and don the fish scales again? Or are we done with the Avengers-style superhero mashups? Only Gunn knows the answer. Luckily, one thing we do know now is that arguably the single most important actor to the DC films over the last decade will be returning as a villain, just like Robert Downey Jr. will debut as Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday, which is slated to come out a month before Supergirl.
Sometimes you stay relevant long enough to see yourself become the villain because studios desperately need you.
