While parent company Oppo has a few foldables under its best, OnePlus waited until 2023 for its first attempt.
The OnePlus Open (pictured) was a compelling debut, combining premium hardware with some genuinely impressive software features. But there’s still room for improvement in a few key areas – including the price.
The OnePlus Open 2 is shaping up to be one of the most formidable challengers to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, with rumours swirling about a massive battery and the cutting-edge Snapdragon 8 Elite processor.
As OnePlus builds on its predecessor’s success, this upcoming foldable might not only catch up to but potentially surpass many other flagships, making it a serious contender among the best foldable phones.
So when can we expect and what exactly will the OnePlus Open 2 offer? Here’s everything we know at this stage.
When will the OnePlus Open 2 be released?
Right now, there is no official information on the Open 2’s launch, or even if OnePlus is working on a new model. But it’d be a surprise to see the company give up after only one generation.
However, while the global launch of the first OnePlus Open took place on 19 October 2023, it looks like OnePlus will settle into a biannual update cycle.

GSMArena reports that Oppo is gearing up to launch the Find N5 soon, although it didn’t appear with the Find X8 as expected. The phone will be a successor to the Find N3, with the number ‘4’ being skipped (apparently due to tetraphobia).
This aligns with a claim from a Chinese leaker, Digital Chat Station, that the Find N5 will arrive by the end of March 2024.
If past trends continue, the Find N5 may launch internationally as the OnePlus Open 2, which could also arrive in the first quarter of 2025.
Digital Chat Station previously also claimed that OnePlus plans to launch the Open 2 in early 2025. This is in line with what another leaker, Chun Bai, said as well.
How much will the OnePlus Open 2 cost?
While we don’t have any concrete information on the price of the OnePlus Fold 2 at the moment, we expect its price to remain competitive.

The One Plus Open costs £1,599/$1,699, making it more affordable than key rivals in the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 (from £1,799/$1,899) and the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold (from £1,749/$1,799).
Hopefully, OnePlus will make the Open 2 even more affordable but that might not be the case, especially if there are significant upgrades.
What specs and features will the OnePlus Open 2 have?
Design
According to Digital Chat Station (via GizmoChina), the Oppo Find N5, and therefore Open 2, retains a similar design to its predecessor, the Find N3, featuring a large, circular camera module on the back.
While specific measurements of the screen size remain unrevealed, the display is reportedly larger than that of the previous generation.
Digital Chat Station claims that while the phone will have an IPX8 water resistance rating, Oppo also aims to keep the device slimmer than the Find N3 thanks to a custom-made slim USB-C port.
Additionally, the device is said to feature an “anti-drop body structure,” an intriguing detail revealed through translation.
Display
The same source also claims that the internal screen of the Oppo Find N5 will support an impressive 2K+ resolution, enhancing its display quality significantly.
This high-resolution display is expected to improve the viewing experience for users, particularly with the larger screen size of this new model.
Performance
The OnePlus Open is powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. This was the latest chipset at the time of launch, but it was soon replaced by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3.
Assuming the Open 2 is released before the end of 2024, it’s likely to be powered by the 8 Gen 3. However, as a 2025 release is now more likely, we rather expect the Snapdragon 8 Elite.

Digital Chat Station thinks the same, as they report that the Oppo Find N5 will be powered by Qualcomm’s newest chipset.
The current model is only available in one configuration (16GB/512GB) and we don’t expect this to change with the release of the Open 2, especially as it offers more RAM and storage than the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Google’s Pixel 9 Pro Fold, for a lower price.
However, it would have been nice to see more storage options, for example in the form of an additional 1TB configuration.
Cameras
Digital Chat Station also reports (via GizmoChina) that Oppo will continue to work with Hasselblad to integrate a powerful triple camera system in the Find N5.
This setup reportedly includes a 50Mp main sensor, a 50Mp ultrawide lens, and a 50Mp periscope telephoto camera capable of 3x optical zoom, which they again claim to be featured.

As a reminder, the OnePlus Open has five cameras: a 48Mp main, 64Mp 3x telephoto and 48Mp ultrawide on the back, plus 32Mp inner selfie and 20Mp cover selfie lenses.
There’s currently no information on whether the selfie camera on the OnePlus Open 2 will change from its predecessor.
Battery & charging
The OnePlus Open is equipped with a 4805mAh battery, providing most users with a full day of usage under typical conditions. But you’ll struggle with more intensive usage, making battery life a key weakness.
Back in July, Digital Chat Station (via Android Authority) revealed that Oppo and Vivo are developing large foldable phones set to launch as early as Q1 2025, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Elite processor and a substantial 6000mAh battery.
Now, the same source reports that the Find N5 (the basis for the Open 2 as a reminder) will feature a dual-cell battery configuration with a rated capacity of 5565mAh, likely reaching around 5700mAh in typical capacity.

The OnePlus Open features 67W fast charging, with the necessary charger included in the box. It can charge up to 50% in just 15 minutes, reaching a full charge in less than 45 minutes.
Although exact details on wired charging speeds of the Oppo Find N5/OnePlus Open 2 are yet to be confirmed, the device is rumoured to support both wireless and magnetic wireless charging, offering flexibility for users.
Digital Chat Station also claims that the phone will feature wireless charging.
Software
As it’s now confirmed that the latest OnePlus devices will get an update to Android 15 as soon as this month, along with OxygenOS 15, it’s safe to assume that the OnePlus Open 2 will very likely debut with it as well.
All the current multitasking features available on the OnePlus Open are also likely to make their way to the Open 2, as well with some new additions.
