Donald Trump has set his sights on a bold and controversial agenda in his new term as president, targeting constitutional provisions on birthright citizenship while outlining plans that extend from domestic reforms to international conflicts.

Trump is on a roll with changes during his recent election to a new term as president. This time, he wants to strip rights from those born in the country to undocumented parents. This is despite laws laid down in the constitution which has enshrined protection for these citizens.

Right now, those born in the US are classed at citizens of the United States. The latest move, spearheaded by Trump, will see things change as those born in the country to undocumented parents will lose their rights as US citizens. These moves were stipulated in a well-mediated interview lately on NBC’s Meet The Press, Sky News’ US partner, where he also made reference to his plans for January 6 pardons – regarding the attack on the US Capitol – and to the Ukraine war.

Trump pledges mass deportation of undocumented illegal immigrants

During the interview, Trump created some uncomfortable rifts when he re-emphasized his campaign pledge to oversee the mass deportation of illegal immigrants and that this would be launched off the ground, firstly with undocumented immigrants who have committed crimes. He did not reveal which ones but then went onto add that this would then extend to “people outside of criminals”. To justify this decision, he simply said there was “no choice.” Trump has often been heavily criticized, especially by left wing political branches for his right wing, protectionist and nationalist agenda and fresh policies on deportation of immigrants is unlikely to be received well. In November, he quoted: “Going forward, the future children of illegal aliens will not receive automatic US citizenship.” He plans to deport illegal immigrants and their children, which has sparked fury across the US. One X (formerly Twitter) user remarked: “So he’ll be deporting Barron and Melania (not to mention Elon Musk and all his kids). Right?”

Trump also made some bold statements on social media which caused some shockwaves, especially in relation to aid support from the US to Ukraine. He wrote on Sunday that Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Ukraine “would like to make a deal and stop the madness,”  and called for an “immediate ceasefire.” Controversially, he also discussed his closeness to Putin slipping in the fact that he knew “Vladimir well. This is his time to act. China can help. The world is waiting!”

Trump to strip some citizens of US nationality and could quit NATO

The US president dropped some bomb shells about possible cuts in US aid, saying that quite “possibly” he would be prepared to reduce aid to Ukraine, as well as to leave NATO if other members of the organisation didn’t start to pull their weight to increase their contributions instead of  leaving the US to foot the bill. Trump confidently asserted that if these changes weren’t made then “absolutely. Yeah, absolutely” he would be retreating from NATO.

Trump’s promise to end the conflict in Russia and Ukraine has gone further than the pledges made by Joe Biden. The new US president certainly seems to be sticking his neck on the line when it comes to considering negotiations with Putin – unlike his predecessor. With a new lease of life, having had talks with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukraine Prime Minister, Zelensky, Trump was keen to announce his latest, somewhat provocative, objectives.
