Get ready for a snow bombshell as Arctic weather sets its sights on the UK.
Britain is gearing up for a snowy smackdown as new weather maps predict a nationwide hammering on Sunday, December 17. From the towering peaks of the Scottish Highlands to the bustling streets of London, it looks like Jack Frost is on a mission to leave no corner untouched.
Arctic blast will hit the UK
Brace yourselves for a wintry wallop. Early risers on December 17 will wake to a frosty surprise as snowstorms sweep the country. The first flakes are expected to start falling at 6 AM, blanketing the north before spreading southwards. By midday, much of the UK will have felt the chill, with snowfall reaching up to 3cm per hour in some areas.
Scotland
The Highlands will bear the brunt of this Arctic blast, with snow dumping between 0.2 and 3cm per hour around Inverness and Ben Nevis. Oddly enough, Edinburgh and Aberdeen could escape the worst of it.
England
A light dusting is forecast from Northumberland down to Birmingham, with snowfall reaching up to 2cm per hour. Even Somerset, just north of London, is in for a 1cm per hour flurry – a rare sight this far south.
London and the Southeast
By noon, snow will have touched down in Kent, London, and other parts of the Southeast, with falls of 0.2 to 1.5cm per hour expected.
Newcastle and Lincolnshire
Meanwhile, Newcastle and Lincolnshire, further north, will also see their fair share of wintry weather at similar rates.
Met Office: ‘Frosty interludes ahead’
The Met Office has issued a wintry warning for the weeks leading up to Christmas. While high-pressure systems are likely to bring calmer weather to the south initially, mid-December could see a shift to more unsettled conditions, with rain and wintry showers sweeping across most regions. Later in the month, expect frosty mornings and foggy evenings as colder air takes hold.
WXCHARTS weather maps are painting a dramatic picture, with swathes of purple signalling snowfalls stretching 874 miles from Scotland to Wales. It’s a clear warning: expect a frozen Britain and possible travel chaos as winter makes itself known.
