TCL 50 PRO NXTPAPER 5G reviewed
Our testers were both looking forward to road testing this phone, albeit with some reservations too, which we will explain in due course too. Firstly, and yes, perhaps a slightly trivial observation, but the team felt the name was a bit clunky. Sure we get the TCL part, and maybe 50 and pro too, but what does Nxtpaper aim to mean or suggest? Maybe it is something that got lost in translation perhaps?
This phone has a nice look and feel, and is on the market at a reasonable price too. These are all factors in it’s favour. It is hard to see a significant difference between the two flavours of the phone, pro and otherwise, so you might need to do a really deep dive to answer that one, or perhaps they are just slightly different ultimately. The performance specs are quite similar, and it would be great if there was at least some water and dust protection. A bit like those companies that supply a phone without at least a generic case, it seems like it is actually in your own self interest to offer a product with greater durability and resilience. A phone that lasts longer will then count more favourably in your potential customers future purchasing decisions, something we will return too soon too.
For the price range that it sits in, the camera is good, and the battery life is good too. These are definitely pluses for the phone. In previous tests our team liked the TCLs and were positive about them. They were definitely getting a similar vibe for this phone too. Here we get to their one major reservation. With at least two previous models, our testers liked the TCLs so much that they then went away and used them on an ongoing basis. This is always a good sign, except that, around 12 months later, in at least two instances, the phones then suddenly, and permanently then refused to take any more charge, and so, in effect died on them.
How long should a phone in this price category last? We think probably slightly longer than this, and, in both cases, no other damage had been done to the phone, it simply wouldn’t receive charge any more. Will this phone perform any better? Well that is impossible to answer for now, but our testers are hopeful that this aspect can be improved, even if it is not something that they can effectively test without the benefit of time and hindsight.
