Sounds familiar? Sure it does – Wicked is the film adaptation of the stage musical of the same title, based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. As if it wasn’t complicated enough, the book derives from the famous L. Frank Baum’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. However, Maguire offers a subversive look at its characters while analysing the topic of evil.

The movie will follow a similar path. The main character is Elphaba Thropp (Cynthia Erivo), a young woman misunderstood because of her green skin. As she arrives at Shiz University, she unexpectedly befriends the popular Galinda Upland (Ariana Grande). However, after the encounter with the Wonderful Wizard of Oz (Jeff Goldblum), the two friends take different directions, leading them to become Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

The Wicked film will naturally be a musical, so you may expect many catchable tunes illustrating that story of good and evil.

When could Wicked tickets go on sale?

The new Universal Pictures blockbuster will appear in UK cinemas on Monday, 18 November 2024.

In the US, Wicked will open a few days later, on Friday, 22 November 2024. That means the witchy tale will compete for viewers’ attention with the highly-anticipated Gladiator 2. Ridley Scott’s epic tale will also debut in American cinemas on 22 November.

Wicked will hit movie theatres after Halloween, a little before Christmas and just right in time for Thanksgiving. It will probably be one of this year’s buzziest premieres.

Based on previous releases from Universal (such as Twisters), tickets will likely be available for booking a month before the premiere day, which is around mid-to-late October 2024.
