A giant pink lake in Spain is so bright NASA spotted it from space

A strange bright pink shape visible from space on Spain’s Mediterranean coast is getting attention again after NASA shared an image of it from orbit and honestly, most people seeing it for the first time think exactly the same thing: that cannot possibly be real.

But it is.

The huge pink lagoon near Torrevieja, in Alicante province, really does look like that under the right conditions and astronauts aboard the International Space Station managed to capture it clearly enough for it to stand out immediately against the Spanish coastline.

The image was shared through NASA’s Earth Observatory and quickly started circulating online because the colour looks so unnatural compared with everything surrounding it. While most landscapes seen from space fade into ordinary shades of blue, green or brown, this corner of Spain appears almost fluorescent pink beside the Mediterranean.

And once people realise the colour is genuine, the next question is always the same.

Why is the water pink?

The colour comes from tiny organisms living in extremely salty water

The lake is known as the Laguna Rosa de Torrevieja and it forms part of the Natural Park of La Mata and Torrevieja, one of the best known wetland areas in the Valencian Community.

What gives the lagoon its famous colour is a mix of very salty water, strong sunlight and microscopic organisms that thrive in those harsh conditions.

Scientists explain that certain algae and microbes living in highly saline environments produce pink and reddish pigments to protect themselves from the intense Mediterranean sun. As temperatures rise and evaporation increases, the salt concentration becomes even stronger and the colour can intensify dramatically.

That is why the lagoon does not always look exactly the same. Some days the water appears pale pink. Other days it becomes a much deeper shade, especially during hot weather when sunlight reflects strongly across the surface.

People visiting Torrevieja for the first time are often genuinely surprised because photos online sometimes look overly edited or filtered. Then they arrive and realise the lake actually can look exactly like the pictures.

Especially around sunset. At certain times of the evening, the reflections across the water make the whole place look almost unreal. And oddly enough, the neighbouring lagoon sitting right beside it does not share the same colour at all.

That lake, Laguna de La Mata, contains much lower salt levels. Without the same extreme salinity, the microorganisms responsible for the pink tones cannot multiply in large enough quantities there.

So despite being side by side, the two lagoons look completely different from above.

The lagoon became famous online long before NASA shared the image

People living around Torrevieja have been used to the pink lagoon for years, but social media completely changed how famous it became.

Drone videos, holiday photos and sunset pictures from the lake regularly go viral during summer, especially among tourists visiting the Costa Blanca. Some compare it to lakes in Australia or Latin America, while others joke that it looks more like strawberry milkshake than water.

NASA’s image simply pushed that fascination even further because seeing the lagoon from space makes the contrast look even stranger.

From orbit, cities almost disappear. Roads become invisible.

Even entire regions blend into soft colours and textures. Yet the lagoon still stands out instantly.

That is part of what made the image so striking online.

People are used to seeing Spain from above in postcards and satellite maps filled with beaches, dry landscapes and Mediterranean blue. Suddenly there is this huge pink patch sitting beside the coast looking almost painted onto the landscape. And unlike many viral images online, this one does not need editing or artificial enhancement to look dramatic.

Nature already did that part.

Human activity also helped shape the lagoon seen today

Although the pink colour comes naturally, the lagoon itself has also been shaped heavily by human activity over centuries.

The area around Torrevieja has long been linked to salt production and remains one of Europe’s most important salt extraction zones. The lagoon is artificially connected to the Mediterranean through channels known locally as ‘acequiones’, which help maintain the flow of seawater needed for salt production.

That constant cycle of seawater entering, evaporating and leaving behind concentrated salt also helps preserve the unusual conditions responsible for the pink colour.

Geologists say the lagoon originally formed millions of years ago when part of the coastline gradually closed off from the sea because of sediment accumulation and land movement. Over time, trapped seawater evaporated under the intense sun, leaving enormous concentrations of salt behind.

Today, the lagoon has become both a protected natural space and one of the Costa Blanca’s most recognisable landscapes.

Local authorities regularly remind visitors that despite its beauty, the ecosystem is fragile. Swimming restrictions and environmental protections exist precisely because the balance keeping the lagoon alive is delicate.

Still, every time new images appear online, people react exactly the same way.

They stare at the colour for a few seconds and wonder whether it can possibly be real. And then they realise Spain genuinely has a giant pink lake visible from space.
