According to reports based on confirmed accounts, the number of these senior officials reaches at least 70. Who were they, and how were they killed?
On Saturday, February 28, 2026, the Islamic Republic’s power structure suffered what was undoubtedly its most significant shock. Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic, was killed along with around 40 senior military commanders in US and Israeli strikes on Tehran.
In a statement, the Israeli army said these 40 individuals were killed “in less than one minute” during the first wave of the operation known as “Roaring Lion.”
On March 20, 2026, three more senior Iranian officials—Ali-Mohammad Naeini, spokesperson of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC); Esmail Ahmadi, deputy for intelligence at the Basij Organization; and Mehdi Rostami Shomastan, a senior commander in the Ministry of Intelligence—were killed in Israeli strikes.
