Warframe Players Fear The Game Has Been Hacked After Receiving ‘Nefarious Invites’ [Update]

Warframe players are receiving bizarre in-game messages, often with explicit language or threats. The nature of these messages is unknown at the moment, but fans suspect the multiplayer shooter may have been hacked. Developer Digital Extremes is telling players to not accept these “nefarious invites.”

Fans have sharing concerned posts about these odd messages in places like the Warframe subreddit. The messages sometimes include ableist slurs or incomprehensible drivel, leading some to speculate that the players sending them have been hacked. Digital Extreme has said it’s aware of the issue and taking steps to shut down whatever’s going on. In the meantime, the studio has asked players to report these messages to the team’s support channels.

We are aware of some nefarious invites happening in-game and are actively working on shutting it down. Please do not accept these invites!

— WARFRAME (@PlayWarframe) March 20, 2026

Some of the messages have referenced an affiliation with the Warframe community OpenWF, which is working to make Warframe playable offline for preservation purposes. But representatives from the group have put out a statement on Discord disavowing the spam and saying they aren’t involved.

“Hi, we are aware of people abusing game invites on live,” it read. “We just want to say that we have nothing to do with this, nor do we have access to the ‘game source code’ as claimed in one of the messages. In case you’re new here: This is a preservation project with source-available server reimplementations and some client-side modifications. None of this is something we make available for the latest game version and especially not the live version of the game.”

We’ve reached out to Digital Extremes for comment on the situation and will update the story if we hear back.

Update: 3/20/26, 5:30 p.m. ET: Digital Extremes has posted a statement on the situation on the Warframe forums, saying that no accounts have been compromised. The full statement is as follows:

Firstly, we apologize for the distress this issue may have caused. Bad actors were able to interrupt and change squad invite text fields to show up as a customized message. As the investigation is currently ongoing, we wanted to assure you that no accounts have been compromised nor data exposed, and it is safe to continue playing Warframe. This was strictly a change of text in the Invite prompt. If you have concerns about your account please feel free to make a Support Ticket on the matter and our team will assist.

In the meantime, we have deployed a fix to combat the issue. Matchmaking will still function as normal but you may have temporary issues with sending direct game invites. We will update you further when this has been resolved.

We take this matter extremely seriously, and again, apologize for the distress.
