Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary’s sequel to A Minecraft Movie has found the Alex for its Steve. Kirsten Dunst has joined the sequel, Deadline reported Thursday, a realization of the actor’s months-long dream of making some money, preferably through Minecraft 2.
Last summer, Dunst opined in a Roofman-timed profile in Town and Country that perhaps she could be in a money-making movie, like, say, a Minecraft sequel. Reportedly, her kids enjoyed the first, and maybe she could parlay that into a starring role and hefty paycheck. Dunst is no stranger to blockbusters, of course, having starred in three Spider-Man movies, the original Jumanji, and 2024’s Civil War. Now she’ll be Alex in a sequel that’s all-but guaranteed to clean up: The original A Minecraft Movie made more than $960 million at the box office last year, according to BoxOfficeMojo.
Director Jared Hess will return for the sequel, and is set to co-write the screenplay with Chris Galletta, who worked on the original film’s screenplay. It’s unclear what the title will be. (Minecraft 2? A Minecraft Movie 2? Another Minecraft Movie?) Jack Black is expected to return as protagonist Steve alongside Jason Momoa, who played Garrett “The Garbage Man” Garrison. (Momoa says he had a blast on the set, calling it an “unbelievable movie experience.”) Presumably, co-stars Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Hansen, and Emma Myers will also be back.
A Minecraft Movie teased Alex’s addition to the Minecraft Cinematic Universe in a post-credits scene, but the original did not show her face.
Alex was added to Minecraft, the video game, more than a decade ago as the sandbox game’s default female avatar. At the time, developer Mojang acknowledged that “everyone loves Steve — he’s probably the most famous minecrafter in the world, and has excellent stubble — but jolly old Steve doesn’t really represent the diversity of our playerbase. For that reason, we’re giving all players opportunity to play with an Alex skin instead. She brings thinner arms, redder hair, and a ponytail; she actually looks a bit like [Minecraft designer Jens Bergensten] from certain angles.”
Steve and Alex (and Enderman and Zombie) were added as playable fighters to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in 2020, a clear indication of how popular Minecraft was at the time (and continues to be). Alex stands side by side with Steve in official Minecraft artwork as the game’s co-star.
The sequel to A Minecraft Movie is slated to hit movie theaters on July 23, 2027. The original is streaming on HBO Max.
