Revolut, Google to enable shopping directly via AI chatbots in Europe

AI search visits are expected to outgrow organic visits in Europe by 2028.

Revolut has joined ranks with Google to capitalise on agentic commerce as a growing number of shoppers are expected to make purchases using AI chatbots in the coming years.

This follows just months after PayPal became the first to lay out its plans to enable instant payment within OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

The UK fintech announced plans to make its “one-tap” checkout solution compatible across the emerging landscape of agentic commerce in the UK and EEA. This follows from the launch of Google’s Agent Payments Protocol (AP2) last September, which Revolut is compatible with.

Google’s AP2 protocol, developed alongside payments and technology companies, enables payment systems to securely authenticate, validate and convey an agent’s authority to perform transactions without the human consumer needing to click on the ‘buy’ selection on a merchant’s website.

The protocol is built using cryptographically-signed digital contracts that serve as verifiable proof of a user’s instructions. These mandates are signed by verifiable credentials and act as the foundational evidence for every transaction, Google explains.

In a bullish scenario, analysts predict that agentic shoppers could represent several hundred billions in US e-commerce spending, capturing up to 20pc of the market share. Currently, Morgan Stanley research only points to 1pc of shoppers choosing the agentic route.

Although, as a precursor, traditional organic search traffic in the US is declining by 10pc year over year, with experts expecting AI traffic to surpass legacy search methods by 2029.

Meanwhile, in Europe, AI search visits grew from 4pc in 2024 to 8pc in early 2025. Here, they are projected to reach 25pc by the end of 2026 and outgrow organic search visits in 2028.

Rapid changes in this space is prompting businesses to strategise marketing on AI chatbots and browsers.

Agentic search and shopping allows AI to make personalised suggestions, leading to potentially “smarter” shopping decisions by a consumer. It could also automate delegated tasks such as buying a product as soon as it is on sale.

This growing potential represents a new, huge market for AI companies as well as payment providers. Google, for example, is already collaborating with around 60 organisations, including American Express, Coinbase, Etsy, Mastercard and ServiceNow to develop AP2.

“The future of shopping isn’t a website, it’s a conversation. We aim to move beyond the click-and-pay model to a world where your AI assistant streamlines the checkout for you,” said Alex Codina, the general manager of acquiring at Revolut.

“By enabling Revolut Pay for Agentic Commerce, we are aiming to make our customers’ favourite, most secure payment experience the standard for AI-driven transactions. This will ensure speed, trust, and absolute zero friction for the next generation of digital buying.”

Tara Brady, the president of Google Cloud for the Europe, Middle East and Africa region added, “The future of digital commerce relies on trust, security and speed.

“By leveraging Google’s AP2 protocol, Revolut will remove friction from AI-assisted shopping. Together, Revolut and Google are transforming digital commerce for millions of users in the European Economic Area and the UK.”
