Google might just have saved expats in Spain from the pain of learning Spanish

Real-time voice translation in Android headphones (Beta)Context has never been automatically translated before.

Have you ever felt left out when everyone around you is speaking Spanish? Do you with you could really express yourself in another language? Google has rolled out a game-changer of an update to Google Translate, powered by its Gemini AI models. What it will do is make translations more natural and introduce a beta feature for real-time speech-to-speech translation directly through headphones, so expats suffering in Spain with the lingo can converse with anyone.

The update vastly improves text translations by better understanding context (where you are, what the situation is, is it social?, official? formal, with a child or a police officer, etc), idioms, slang, and tone. Instead of literal word-for-word results as it currently does, Gemini is promised to be able to deliver more accurate and natural outputs.

For example, the English idiom “stealing my thunder” now translates to convey its true meaning rather than a confusing literal version. Not to mention the Spanish phrase expressing frustration about doing something disgusting in the sea – it’s not meant literally!

This smarter translation is rolling out in the Google Translate app (Android and iOS), the web version, and Google Search. It starts with translations between English and nearly 20 languages, including Spanish, Hindi, Chinese, Japanese, and German, ideal for English-speaking expats in Spain fumbling with the local language.

Real-time voice translation in Android headphones (Beta)

One of the most useful features is the new beta for live speech-to-speech translation. Connect any wired or Bluetooth headphones to an Android phone, open the Translate app, and tap “Live Translate”. You can hear real-time translations in your headphones while preserving the original speaker’s tone, emphasis, and cadence for a more natural experience and precise translation. With the standard translation app, none of these are taken into consideration, so real meaning is more often than not, lost.

It supports over 70 languages and works in modes for listening (e.g., speeches or one-sided talks) or two-way conversations. The experimental beta version is currently available on Android in the US, Mexico, and India, with an iOS version for Apple version rumoured to be on the way, as well as expansion to more countries (including Europe) planned for some point in 2026.

Context has never been automatically translated before.

The jury is out on how accurately conversations will be translated, and if mistranslations with Gemini AI might land one in hot water. For example, a casual conversation between friends with, “Oh, look at the time! My wife will kill me when I get home,” could conceivably end in arriving home to find a police car outside your house.
