It would be sad if John Terry never manages Chelsea but it’s unlikely – opinion

Chelsea legend John Terry has done a lot to try and get into football management since retiring from the game, but he has got quite a few rejections in some interviews he has gone for.

Terry had a stint with Aston Villa as assistant manager and he actually saw that as positive time. But from there he just couldn’t move on into another managerial role, despite trying and applying for jobs.

It’s hard to understand why people aren’t giving him a chance as a coach. I’m sure there will be a insider reason as to why, but it’s hard to pinpoint it from the outside in.

I do know that he used to be quite vocal on social media and he would often get into arguments online with fans of rival clubs etc. Maybe that is something that people don’t like as it could be deemed unprofessional? I’ve also seen him ‘liking’ some political stuff on Instagram that some could also object to. I’m speculating of course, but this could all have something to do with it. I’m not sure. Terry has certainly been a bit of a controversial figure shall we say. So maybe that just doesn’t suit some?

For me, I’d be absolutely gutted if he never manages Chelsea. But he’s expressed his desire to do so once again.

Terry explained in a new TikTok video: ‘I’m not sure it ever happens, to be honest.

‘It’s my one last dream I have at the football club. I’ve done everything at Chelsea.

‘And for me now, the one thing that is missing is being the manager of the football club.

‘That’s why I went into coaching when I finished playing. My idea and dream was to learn my trade a bit.

‘As a player, you retire after 22 years… Listen, 100 per cent, you learn enough to go into management.

‘The level I played at and the managers I played under.

‘But it doesn’t give you the right you go into management at a certain level. You still have to learn and understand what it takes.

‘There’s a lot more that goes into the coaching side of it. So I went away and learnt my trade, I had some unbelievable times at Villa, I left Villa to be a number one, I thought I was ready.

‘I think I’d be a really good number one, I enjoyed the coaching side of it.

‘I want people around me that are better coaches than me. Then I could lead the dressing room and the team like I did [as a player].

‘That’s what I did for 22 years at the club. I know I’d be good at it. Will I ever get the chance? I’m not sure, without doing the other bits.

‘But when people tell you you’ve not got the experience, it’s difficult to fathom.’

It is difficult to fathom, and I’d love to know exactly what these clubs have told Terry as to why they aren’t hiring him.

It’s good to see that he’s still opening his door to it though and hasn’t completely given up yet. I think he should go down the Jody Morris route and manage an U18s side to start with, learn the trade there and work up.

At the moment at Chelsea, Terry has an ‘Academy consultant’ role where he does talks to the players and speaks about mentality and teaches what it means to represent the club etc.
