Pokémon Legends: Z-A type chart — strengths and weaknesses, explained Pokémon Legends: Z-A type strength and weakness chart

Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A all have a type, and some have two. Whether Pokémon Legends: Z-A is your first Pokémon game or you’ve played them all, memorizing the Pokémon type chart — which covers all the different types plus their strengths and weaknesses — can be a challenge.

Below, you can use our guide to the Pokémon type chart in Legends: Z-A to figure out which moves are super effective against which opponents, and which moves you should be on the lookout for.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A type chart — strengths and weaknesses, explained

Based on what type it is, each Pokémon is strong or weak against certain other types. Using the starter trio as an example, Totodile’s water-type moves will be “super effective” (i.e. strong) against fire-type Tepig and deal double damage. However, its water-type attacks will be “not very effective” (i.e. weak) against grass-type Chikorita and only deal half damage, as water is weak against grass.

Most types have multiple strengths and weaknesses. Using the water-type Totodile again as an example, its water-type moves will be super effective not only against fire-type Pokémon, but ground- and rock-type Pokémon as well. Conversely, it’s weak against not just grass-type attacks, but electric-type as well.

Some Pokémon will have two types, which can make things tricky. Depending on the types at play, a Pokémon’s strengths and weaknesses could be doubled. For example, the bug- and flying-type Scyther is extra susceptible to rock-type moves as they’re super effective against both bug- and flying-type Pokémon.

Damage taken could also be reverted to a normal damage amount for Pokémon with two types. Charizard, for example, is both fire- and flying-type, meaning it takes normal damage from ice-type moves. Ice-type is strong against flying-type but weak against fire-type, so those modifiers essentially cancel each other out when an ice-type move is used against the fire- and flying-type Charizard.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A has a special battle mechanic called Mega Evolutions. In the heat of battle, certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve, and some Mega Evolutions can change a Pokémon’s type. Looking at Charizard again, one of its Mega Evolutions changes it from fire- and flying-type to fire- and dragon-type. This means that some attacks that did normal damage against regular Charizard, like dragon-type moves, would now be super effective. (Yep, dragon-type Pokémon are both strong and weak against dragon-type Pokémon.) This will be something to keep in mind when battling with, or against, Mega Evolved Pokémon.

Moves from a few different types will have no effect against others, and this will be important to keep in mind during the real-time battles. For example, ground-type moves will have no effect against flying-type Pokémon. Here is list of types will have no effect when used against other specific types:

  • Dragon-type moves have no effect against fairy-types
  • Electric-type moves have no effect against ground-types
  • Fighting-type moves have no effect against ghost-types
  • Ghost-type moves have no effect against normal-types
  • Ground-type moves have no effect against flying-types
  • Normal-type moves have no effect against ghost-types
  • Poison-type moves have no effect against steel-types
  • Psychic-type moves have no effect against dark-types

Understanding your Pokémon’s strengths and weaknesses can be the key to victory in battle. To maximize your damage, and protect against your Pokémon’s weakness, make sure your Pokémon has a type advantage against its opponent.

Memorizing every type strength and weakness in Pokémon Legends: Z-A can get confusing. Here’s a type chart to help you out.
