Passengers at New York’s LaGuardia Airport were left stunned on Wednesday October 1 after two Delta Air Lines planes collided on the ground in what could easily have been a much more serious accident.
The crash happened just before 10 pm, when two CRJ-900 aircraft, both operated by Delta’s regional arm Endeavor Air, came into contact at low speed while manoeuvring on the tarmac. One wing was sliced open, the nose of the other badly crumpled – and within moments, emergency crews were swarming the scene with flashing lights.
Passengers evacuated in tense scenes
More than 80 passengers were forced to evacuate, bundled onto buses and driven back to Terminal C. Some filmed the dramatic aftermath on their phones, posting clips of the broken aircraft on social media.
Delta confirmed that one of the planes had just landed from Charlotte carrying 57 passengers, while the other was preparing to depart for Roanoke with 28 on board. In total, eight crew members were present between the two flights.
While no passengers were injured, one flight attendant suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital as a precaution.
Delta apologises and investigation begins
In a statement, Delta apologised to all those affected, insisting that passenger and crew safety is its “number one priority”. The airline said all travellers had been rebooked and offered hotel accommodation and meals to ease the disruption.
“We are fully cooperating with the authorities to understand what happened,” Delta said, promising a full review of procedures.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration have already launched investigations to determine whether human error, miscommunication or visibility issues were to blame.
LaGuardia keeps running despite chaos
Despite the collision, LaGuardia Airport stressed that its operations were not affected, with other flights continuing as normal. The damaged planes were towed away for inspection overnight.
Experts say that while incidents like this are unusual, airports like LaGuardia – known for its cramped taxiways and heavy traffic – can be particularly challenging for pilots and ground crews.
