Launched in the late 1970s, from the beginning, Mad Max was a dark, violent story with a mythical vibe and a healthy dose of camp. The depiction of civilization destroyed first by an oil crisis, then a nuclear war and fights for water is both powerful and highly disturbing.

The vision of post-nuclear wastelands and bizarre characters from Mad Max universe undoubtedly impacted pop culture. It inspired, for example, the creators of the Fallout games, which were recently adapted into a Fallout series on Prime Video.

Find out when to watch all movies from the Mad Max saga and what to expect from them.

What are the Mad Max movies?

Mad Max (1979)

The movie, set in 1985, covers the events before the nuclear conflict. After the Gulf War, the world is gripped by a fuel crisis. There are still stores and police (Max, portrayed by Mel Gibson, is a young cop), but gasoline is running out, and armed gangs are appearing. The film doesn’t yet feature the scorching wastelands; the action takes place on the Australian coast, covered with grass and trees.

Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981)

The film is set around 1988, three years after the events of the first part. According to one theory, a nuclear war has already swept through the world; according to the other – it is yet to happen. Together with Max, we move to the Australian wilderness, the first warlords appear and the few settlers try to survive.

Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985)

The third part of Max’s adventures takes place 15 years after The Road Warrior, around 2003, although according to another theory – even later. Some time has passed since the nuclear war, and the survivors are trying to rebuild civilization. Max ends up in Bartertown, a town ruled with a firm hand by the Aunty Entity, played by Tina Turner.

Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)

The film initiates a “new” series about Max, with Tom Hardy taking the lead role. It’s also the first movie featuring Furiosa. The nuclear summer and vague memories of civilization suggest that decades have passed since the apocalypse. Thus, the action may take place around 2050. On the other hand, Max looks 30-40 years old, which means the action may also be set in the first decade of the 21st century.

Where to stream Mad Max movies in the US

Warner Bros. owns the Mad Max series, so in the States, you can stream all four movies on Max.

An ad-supported package costs $9.99 per month / $99.99 per year, while an ad-free tier is priced at $15.99 per month / $149.99 per year.

Where to stream Mad Max movies in the UK

In the UK, you can stream Mad Max: Fury Road on Now, or watch on Sky Cinema if you have that included in your TV package. However, that’s the only film available on streaming sites.

If you want to stream all Mad Max movies, you can use VPN (virtual private network). This allows you to bypass geoblocking and access foreign websites, for example, Max. We recommend NordVPN, one of the most reliable apps of its kind.
