Sony raises PS5 price in U.S. on all consoles

Sony is raising the retail price of the PlayStation 5 across the board in the U.S., the company announced Wednesday. Starting Aug. 21, the price of all PS5 consoles will go up by $50, an increase that Sony Interactive Entertainment VP of global marketing Isabelle Tomatis attributes to “a challenging economic environment.”

As of Thursday, here are the new recommended retail prices for PlayStation 5 consoles:

  • PlayStation 5 – $549.99 (was $499.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99 (was $449.99)
  • PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99 (was $699.99)

Sony says it’s not raising prices on PlayStation 5 accessories, like the DualSense controller and PlayStation Portal, nor is it raising prices on PS5 consoles outside the U.S.

The move follows similar price increases from Microsoft on its Xbox consoles and Nintendo on original Switch consoles. Sony’s announcement of more expensive PS5 consoles in the U.S. comes just a few months after SIE raised prices on the PS5 in other territories, including Europe, the U.K., Australia, and New Zealand.

In May, Sony said it had a three-month stockpile of PlayStation 5 consoles earmarked for the U.S., presumably a wait-and-see strategy for handling U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on China, where some PlayStation hardware is manufactured. While Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki floated the idea of making PlayStation hardware in the U.S. to bypass tariffs, chief financial officer Lin Tao warned that Sony was looking at a financial impact of 100 billion yen (about $684 million) from tariffs across its divisions. “We may pass on to the price,” she said at the time.

Three months later, it appears that Sony has made its decision.
