Cost shouldn’t be a deterrent to furthering your career, so why not consider a free or lower cost course as part of your professional development?
There are a number of STEM roles gaining traction in 2025, creating plenty of opportunities for professionals looking to advance their careers or take on new challenges. But often in-person and online courses can be expensive, time-consuming or inconvenient.
In 2025, education should be as modern as the roles that are on offer, not to mention it shouldn’t cost an arm and a leg to advance yourself. So, for professionals looking to upskill in STEM without breaking the bank, what career opportunities are available?
IT manager
The role of the IT manager is evolving exponentially, with people in this field responsible for a vastly changing set of tasks. For example, empowering organisations to modernise the workforce, strategising short- and long-term IT goals, and protecting their institution from internal and external threats.
To stay on top of the work, IT managers need constant upskilling and can avail of courses such as a free-to-join IT Systems and Analysis programme available via upskilling platform Coursera.
The course is aimed at intermediate-level professionals and can be completed in two weeks at your own convenience. The main focus is amalgamating advanced technologies with the overarching needs of the business.
IT managers may also consider a range of other free and low-cost Coursera tutorials in areas such as cybersecurity, data analytics and project management.
Cybersecurity
Another dramatically altered STEM industry is undoubtedly the cybersecurity sector. Advancements in technology, as well as unstable world politics have created an environment in which cyber experts can’t afford to rest on their laurels. For beginners, Great Learning has an introductory course teaching Cybersecurity for Leaders, and there is also a course offering the Basics for a Career in Cybersecurity.
More advanced professionals may consider courses in Advanced Cybersecurity Threats and Governance and intermediate Cybersecurity for Leadership, which cover modern threats and the best ways to protect your organisation and workforce against malicious activity.
Coursera in partnership with Google also has the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certificate, which runs on a flexible schedule and is typically completed in six months. Students learn relevant in-demand skills such as threat detection, SQL, debugging and event monitoring, among others.
As we move closer to a world where advanced and fully realised quantum technology is possible, cyber professionals should also make a point of learning the basics of quantum.
Coursera has several options ranging in complexity, teaching the basics, such as Quantum Computing for Everyone, but also looking more in depth at tougher topics, such as the Hands-on Quantum Error Correction with Google Quantum AI course.
Automation experts
The field of automation is in need of curious and highly skilled professionals, as the workplace becomes increasingly automated and there is a higher demand for experts with a more diverse skillset.
While not completely free, Springboard, which is based in Ireland, offers those who want to upskill in automation engineering reduced prices, based on their current work status.
For example, to take part in the in-person course at the South East Technological University, 50pc of the cost will be reduced for employed applicants and it is fully covered for unemployed people. The course gives students the foundational knowledge and qualifications they need to pursue other opportunities in education and the automation engineering industry.
Udemy has multiple opportunities for IT workers, with free online courses such as practical AI Automation for AI teams, Learn Automation using Microsoft Powerautomate and Zapier and Enterprise Automation. There are dozens more, ranging in length and offering a broad education in the area of IT automation.
