Star Wars Outlaws 2 Was Planned, Has Been Cancelled – Rumour

With Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot saying earlier this month that Star Wars Outlaws had underperformed, a new report indicates that the company originally had plans for a sequel. Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson said in a recent episode of the publication’s podcast that the company had recently cancelled a potential sequel.

It is worth noting that, even according to Henderson’s sources, the sequel was quite early in development and hadn’t even entered the full production phase yet. The game was likely cancelled while it was still in pre-production after the overall poor reception to Star Wars Outlaws. “They also recently canceled Star Wars Outlaws 2, because that was planned and in the works,” said Henderson. “It didn’t enter production, as far as I know, it wasn’t set in stone.”

Guillemot, in a recent shareholder meeting, had spoken about Star Wars Outlaws’ “failure, in terms of sales”, laying the blame on the state of the overall Star Wars franchise these days. Answering the question, he said that Star Wars Outlaws “was released at a time when the brand that it belonged to was in a bit of choppy waters.”

Star Wars Outlaws had originally came out last year, and by September 2024, Ubisoft had already said that the game had not met its sales expectations “despite solid ratings (Metacritic 76) and user scores across the First Party and Epic stores (3.9/5)” In its earnings release, the company admitted that “Star Wars Outlaws’ initial sales proved softer than expected.”

Developer Massive Entertainment had also taken to social media to update fans of the games about how the studio planned on bringing in improvements. In its social media post, the studio said that it was working on creating multiple title updates that will “bring optimization, gameplay polishing and tweaks” along with some quality of life changes to the overall gameplay.

Since its release, Star Wars Outlaws has seen a number of post-launch DLCs launched, with the most recent one being A Pirate’s Fortune. The DLC revolves around protagonist Kay Vess teaming up with Hondo Ohnaka to hunt for treasure by exploring the depths of Kephi Tomb. Along the way, the two have to deal with threats from the Rokana Raiders and their leader Stinger Tash.

The game is currently available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. Ubisoft has also confirmed that Star Wars Outlaws will be coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on September 4. The Switch 2 release was announced alongside a new trailer.
