Are we finally saying Goodbye to the tiny Bottles?… If you’re anything like me, you’ve probably done that last-minute panic at airport security – squeezing your favourite face wash into one of those annoying little travel bottles or, worse, chucking it in the bin because you forgot about the rules.

Every traveller has been there. The big question on everyone’s mind: are we finally about to wave goodbye to the 100ml liquid limit?

There’s been a lot of excited talk lately, especially after some rather promising hints from the folks at Homeland Security in the States. Apparently, changes might be coming that could let us carry more than a thimbleful of shampoo or even keep our bottles of water as we stroll through security. Sounds like a dream, right?

The real reasons Airport liquid rules aren’t changing yet

Here’s where reality sets in. Despite the buzz, there’s a pretty big catch: most airports just aren’t ready. The new kit—CT scanners, like the ones you find in hospitals—can tell the difference between your innocent hair gel and something a bit more suspicious. These machines are brilliant and already up and running in some major US airports. But installing them everywhere is a mammoth job. They cost millions, take up loads of space, and, frankly, most airports just haven’t got round to it yet.

Out of over 400 airports in the US, just over half have the fancy scanners. And across Europe, it’s much the same. The UK tried to ease restrictions last year but had to backtrack—surprise, surprise, not enough airports had the gear. So for now, those little plastic bags aren’t going anywhere.

Why do we even have the liquid ban?

Let’s rewind for a second. It all started back in 2006 when British police foiled a terrifying plot: would-be attackers were planning to blow up planes using liquid explosives disguised as drinks. After that, the rules changed overnight. No more big bottles in hand luggage, and suddenly the world was obsessed with 100ml.

Old X-ray machines just couldn’t tell what was safe and what wasn’t, so the only solution was to ban everything. Since then, countless water bottles, perfumes, and face creams have ended up in airport bins.

What travellers  can expect next at Airport security

The new scanners are a total game-changer—when they’re actually in place. Security staff can now see what’s really inside your bag, in glorious 3D, spinning it round and zooming in on anything odd. No more guessing games, and much less chance of accidentally binning your pricey moisturiser.

But don’t celebrate just yet. Experts reckon it could be another decade (or two!) before every airport has the new system. Until then, you might find yourself allowed a big bottle at Heathrow, but not at your tiny return airport in Spain or Greece. Cue confusion—and more confiscated toiletries.

A Bit of optimism… with a side of caution

Airport security is a tough job, and the stakes are sky-high. Since these rules came in, there hasn’t been a major incident involving liquids on a plane. So, as annoying as the liquid ban is, it’s there for a reason.

For now, keep your little bottles handy and your favourite perfume tucked in the hold. But don’t lose hope – change is on the way. One day, we’ll laugh about all those mini toothpaste tubes. Just… maybe not this summer.

In the meantime, here’s to smooth travels, lighter bags, and the hope that the only thing you lose at the airport is your sense of direction—not your favourite shampoo.
