ePower supports solar-powered EV facility in Ireland first

The ‘first-of-its-kind’ facility will support Ireland’s electric vehicle drivers and showcase how various energy sources can be combined to provide an environmentally friendly alternative.

ePower, an electric vehicle (EV) charging company, will bring their services to Galway’s Westside EV Charging Hub, which will reportedly be the first public EV facility in Ireland to be operated through solar-power, with a battery and grid back-up.

Founded in 2018 and headquartered in Cork, with a premises in Dublin, ePower installs, maintains and manages domestic, commercial and public EV chargers across Ireland. It is also heavily involved in the country’s solar panel industry.

The batteries at the facility store free energy, generated from solar power, so drivers of electric vehicles can make use of a clean energy source, regardless of how much sun there has been on that particular day.

Commenting on the opening of the Westside EV Charging Hub, John O’Keeffe, the CEO of ePower said “Because ePower is a market leader in the provision of both EV chargers and solar panels, it made perfect sense for us to partner with Galway City Council for this innovative project.

“The hub is an excellent showcase of how various energy sources can be combined to provide an environmentally friendly option for EV drivers. ePower is also bringing this expertise to help its customers who wish to implement these novel, sustainable and money saving solutions at their own premises.”

In addition to the recent collaboration with Galway City Council, ePower is also working with the four Dublin local authorities on what will be Ireland’s largest single rollout of fast charger hubs. The first sites will open in the coming months.

In the last year and a half ePower has undertaken a number of projects to innovate within Ireland’s growing solar and clean energy sectors. For example, last July the company partnered with Fota Island Resort in Cork to install 12 charging points available to hotel guests and members of the public.

Additionally, the organisation announced the use of a new Dublin base to meet rising demand and raised €16m to expand its operations in the coming years.
