D Day 81st Anniversary

“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months…”
With these iconic words General Dwight D. Eisenhower addressed the Allied troops on the eve of D-Day.

This 6th of June marks the 81st anniversary of Operation Overlord, the largest amphibious invasion in military history. It was the culmination of months of meticulous strategic planning and international cooperation—yet it almost didn’t go ahead due to severe weather conditions in the English Channel.

Despite the odds, over 160,000 troops from Britain, America, Canada, and other Allied nations landed on a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coastline, divided into five sectors: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, and Sword. The operation involved more than 5,200 ships and 13,000 aircraft, all working in coordination to breach the Atlantic Wall. By midnight, the Allies had suffered over 10,300 casualties, with many soldiers killed, wounded, or missing.

Supporting the seaborne assault were two heroic airborne missions carried out in the early hours of June 6th. On the eastern flank, British paratroopers of the 6th Airborne Division launched Operation Tonga, tasked with capturing strategic bridges over the Caen Canal and River Orne—including the now-famous Pegasus Bridge—and destroying the heavily fortified Merville Gun Battery. Their success prevented Axis reinforcements from flanking the eastern beaches.

Meanwhile, on the western flank, American paratroopers of the 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions executed Operations Albany and Boston, landing behind enemy lines near Utah Beach. Their mission was to secure causeways, seize bridges, and block Axis movements from the west. Despite scattered drops and fierce resistance, their determination and sacrifice were vital to the overall success of the landings.

At the time, Winston Churchill was not fully in support of the operation. In April 1944, he confided to an advisor, “This battle has been forced upon us by the Russians and the United States military authorities.” Still, he was determined to witness history. Churchill requested to be present for the landings aboard HMS Belfast, and even hoped to go ashore on Juno Beach.

It took a firm intervention from King George VI—who on two occasions, including June 2nd, strongly opposed the idea and even threatened to accompany Churchill himself—to persuade the Prime Minister to abandon his plans.

In the end, Churchill made it to Normandy six days later, on June 12th, aboard HMS Kelvin. Ever the bold statesman, he insisted the ship take part in the bombardment of enemy positions while he stood on the bridge, witnessing the hard-fought progress of the liberation of Europe.

As we mark another year since that fateful day, we honour the extraordinary courage and sacrifice of all who fought—and especially those who never returned. Soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and paratroopers—ordinary people from across the Allied nations—stood together in the face of tyranny and changed the course of history.

Their memory lives on, not only in books and monuments, but also in the words of those who were there. One such voice is that of Cyril Crain, a Juno Beach veteran, whose poignant poem reminds us of the humanity behind the heroism:

Cyril Crain (Juno veteran)
Come and stand in memory
Of men who fought and died
They gave their lives in Normandy
Remember them with pride.

Soldiers, Airmen, sailors
Airborne and marines
Who in civvy life were tailors
And men who worked machines.

British and Canadian
And men from USA
Forces from the Commonwealth
They all were there that day

To Juno, Sword and Utah
Beaches of renown
Also Gold and Omaha
That’s where the ramps went down.

The battle raged in Normandy
Many lives were lost
The war must end in victory
And this must be the cost

When my life is over
And I reach the other side
I’ll meet my friends from Normandy
And shake their hands with pride.

Let us remember all who fought—with pride, with gratitude, and with a promise never to forget.
