It’s been a long couple of days in Russia’s Ukraine invasion. Moscow launched 367 drones and missiles, killing 13 Ukrainians. President Donald Trump called his Russian counterpart “crazy” for the attack, and the Kremlin responded by saying he’s emotional, while Germany approved Kiev’s use of long-range missiles against their enemy.
The US president went on Truth Social on Sunday and said that “something has happened” to Putin. “He has gone absolutely CRAZY!”, Trump said. “He is needlessly killing a lot of people, and I’m not just talking about soldiers. Missiles and drones are being shot into Cities in Ukraine, for no reason whatsoever.”
Russia’s downfall, according to Trump
Trump also warned Russia against trying to control all of Ukraine. “I’ve always said that he wants ALL of Ukraine, not just a piece of it, and maybe that’s proving to be right, but if he does, it will lead to the downfall of Russia!” However, his rant did not stop there; he also lashed out against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
He’s doing Ukraine no favours
“President Zelenskyy is doing his Country no favours by talking the way he does. Everything out of his mouth causes problems, I don’t like it, and it better stop,” warned Trump.
And then in an attempt to distance himself again, he said: “This is a War that would never have started if I were President. This is Zelenskyy’s, Putin’s, and Biden’s War, not ‘Trump’s,’ I am only helping to put out the big and ugly fires that have been started through Gross Incompetence and Hatred.”
He did, however, later tell a reporter that he would consider more sanctions on Russia to further punish them for doing everything but showing a willingness to enter peace talks with Ukraine.
Russia’s largest aerial attack yet
Trump’s comments followed Russia’s largest combined aerial attack since the start of its invasion just over three years ago. At least 13 people were killed and dozens injured in Ukraine during the night between Saturday and Sunday after Moscow fired 367 drones and missiles.
On Monday, according to the BBC, the Kremlin claimed Trump was displaying signs of “emotional overload” after he called Putin “absolutely crazy.”
Dmitry Peskov, Putin’s spokesman, said the comments were “connected to an emotional overload of everyone involved”.
Peskov said the latest aerial assaults were a response to Ukrainian attacks on Russia’s “social infrastructure”.
The Russian defence ministry said that air defence systems destroyed 20 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions.
Zelensky said on Sunday there was no “military sense” to Russia’s aerial attacks, but instead was a clear signal that Putin wants to continue the war and destroy lives.
Germany approves use of long-range missiles
Germany’s chancellor, Friedrich Merz, meanwhile,e said that Ukraine’s allies had removed all range limits on supplied arms, amid reports he would give Kyiv Taurus missiles.
Merz said there were “no longer” range restrictions on arms supplied to Ukraine.
“This means that Ukraine can now defend itself, for example, by attacking military positions in Russia, with very few exceptions. It didn’t do that until recently. It can now do that,” Merz said.
Reuters reported that Zelensky was due to travel to Berlin on Wednesday, although this has not been confirmed.
