Epic announced on Thursday that, beginning in June, for any payments processed by the Epic Games Store, developers will pay zero percent revenue share on their first $1,000,000 per app, per year. When a company’s app hits the milestone, the rev share model reverts to a split of 88%/12%.
Also beginning in June, developers will be able to launch their own “webshops.” As Epic puts it in its announcement, “These webshops can offer players out-of-app purchases, as a more cost-effective alternative to in-app purchases, where Apple, Google, and others charge exorbitant fees. With new legal rulings in place, developers will be able to send players from games to make digital purchases from webshops on any platform that allows it, including iOS in the European Union and United States.”
There’s even more incentive: Epic promises that players spending in the webshops will also earn five percent Epic Rewards on all their purchases.
This week ended a long legal battle between Epic and Apple, during which Epic was no stranger to throwing shade and wielding its platform to make its points. Even after defeating Apple in court, and opening the possibility of Fortnite returning to the iOS store, Epic’s announcements for its own store continue to turn up the heat on the competition between the two tech giants. Unfortunately, word is still out on what this means for the death of Tart Tycoon and the emergence of the so-called Pie Patron.
