GTA 6 hype on hold – Rockstar delays the release of Grand Theft Auto VI to May 2026, frustrating fans who were ready to play on next-gen consoles.

The long wait for Grand Theft Auto VI just got longer. Rockstar Games has officially confirmed that the highly anticipated sequel will now be released in May 2026, pushing back its original 2025 launch window.
The announcement, while not entirely unexpected, has left many fans disappointed—and some outright furious.
Rockstar delays GTA 6 to ensure top-tier quality
In a statement, Rockstar said the delay is to ensure the game meets the ‘level of quality you expect and deserve’, a familiar line for fans used to the studio’s reputation for polished, immersive experiences.
It’s not the first time Rockstar has pushed back a major title. Their 2018 smash hit Red Dead Redemption 2 also saw delays — and ended up being critically acclaimed. It’s clear the company prefers to take its time rather than rush a release.
Still, it’s been a staggering 12 years since GTA V came out — a game that remains wildly popular thanks to its online mode and still ranks as the second-best-selling video game of all time.
GTA 6 delay sparks fan outrage after 12-year wait
While some gamers understand Rockstar’s meticulous approach, many are struggling with the news. “I’m absolutely furious,” said 27-year-old Dienne Kawende in an interview with BBC Newsbeat. “There’s fire flowing through my body right now.”
Kawende said he took a job this year just to save up for a PlayStation 5, expecting to play GTA 6 later in 2025. “It’s all ruined now,” he added, highlighting how the delay has shaken plans for fans already gearing up for the release.
And he’s not alone. Across social media, reactions have ranged from disappointment to disbelief. “I was a teenager when GTA 5 launched,” one user posted. “I’ll have kids by the time GTA 6 comes out.”
GTA 6 delay reshapes 2025 gaming release calendar
The delay could shift the entire release calendar in the gaming industry. Many developers had been holding back announcements or launches, wary of going head-to-head with Rockstar’s juggernaut. With GTA 6 out of the picture until mid-2026, some studios may now move forward with their own big releases.
Rockstar has only offered one official glimpse at GTA 6 so far — a 90-second trailer released in December 2023, showing off a Florida-inspired setting called Leonida and featuring two lead characters. The trailer smashed records, clocking over 100 million views in record time.
Despite the delay, there’s little doubt that when GTA 6 does launch, it will set new sales records. And if Rockstar’s track record holds true, fans’ patience — painful as it may be — is likely to be rewarded.
