BREAKING NEWS: Donald Trump has approved the first shipment of U.S. military gear to Ukraine since taking office, The Times reports. The move follows the long-awaited minerals deal between the United States and Ukraine.
According to the Kyiv Post, the Trump administration has notified Congress of plans to allow direct commercial sales (DCS) of defense equipment worth $50 million or more. The notice was sent on Tuesday, just one day before the minerals agreement was officially signed.
A source close to Ukraine’s government told The Times: “It’s a meaningful first gesture of goodwill from Trump after we delivered on what he asked.”
Trump’s U-Turn on his stance on Ukraine
Days after a heated exchange at the Oval Office with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodomyr Zelensky, Trump ordered a halt to all weapons shipments to Kyiv’s fight against Russia. The US president had called the Ukrainian leader a dictator and accused him of refusing to collaborate toward ending what he called a nonsensical and bloody war.
Now, following the signing on Wednesday of the natural resources agreement with Ukraine, the Trump Administration has taken a U-turn in respect to its stance on Zelensky and Kyiv as well as toward Russia, whom the Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, accused of a “full-blown” invasion.
