At least 31 people, including two children, were killed and over 84 more injured, including 10 children, Sunday in the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy in Russia’s deadliest attack this year, President Volodymyr Zelensky reported via X.
Zelensky said Russia pounded Sumy with several ballistic missiles while people were attending church services. The president called for a “strong response from the world” in a statement. Two Russian ballistic missiles pounded Zumy’s city centre, the head of the military administration in the region, Volodymyr Artyukh, confirmed.
“At that time, a lot of people were on the street,” Aryukh added. “The enemy was hoping to inflict the greatest damage on people.”
“Only scoundrels can act like this. Taking the lives of ordinary people,” Zelensky said in another X post in which he included a chilling video of the attack. “The world must respond firmly. The United States, Europe, everyone in the world who wants this war and these killings to end. Russia wants exactly this kind of terror and is dragging this war out,” he added.
The Ukrainian president said: “Without pressure on Russia, peace is impossible. What’s needed is an attitude toward Russia that a terrorist deserves.“
Ukraine claims it has eliminated 933,000 enemies
In a summary released this Sunday recounting casualties after 1,145 days of the war, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine claims it has eliminated at least 933,000 “enemy occupiers.”
The Kiev Independent today recounted President Donald Trump’s recent report that millions of lives have been lost in Ukraine due to what he called a “very bloody war.”
On February 16, Zelensky said over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 360,000 more injured on the battlefield.ç¡
Russia has increased air and missile strikes on the Sumy region in recent weeks as it has pushed Ukrainian forces out of most of the adjoining Russian territory of Kursk.
Ukraine and Russia had agreed to end attacks on each other’s energy facilities last month, but both parties have repeatedly accused each other of breaking the moratorium.
