For the first time in over 45 years, New York City’s iconic subway map has undergone a major redesign. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has officially replaced the version that’s been in use since 1979, unveiling a new and improved map.

NYC Subway map upgrade

“This is a lynchpin moment,” said MTA Chairman and CEO Janno Lieber at the launch, as the first of 22,000 paper copies were installed at the Times Square station. These maps will soon appear in every train car and station across the city.

The new design pays homage to Massimo Vignelli’s 1972 layout, bringing back bold colours for each subway line and broader strokes to improve visibility. According to NBC New York, feedback from public focus groups influenced the updates – particularly clearer markings at transfer hubs. For example, it’s now more obvious that riders can switch from the R train to the 5 at Union Square without exiting the station.

“There’s a lot on this map that will make it easier for people to see,” said Andrew Albert, an MTA board member who worked directly with the graphics team to reflect rider concerns. One such fix included adjusting the L train’s path to better represent its direction towards Canarsie.

Lieber said the final product “includes all the enhancements we’ve made throughout the years” and is “much easier to read” than the old version (cited by CBS News New York).

Mixed reactions from long-time users of New York’s Subway

While many welcomed the update, not everyone was impressed. Manhattan resident Kathleen McCabe told NBC New York, “I hope they didn’t spend a lotta money on this.” However, MTA officials were quick to reassure that the redesign cost “next to nothing” and was completed using in-house staff – amounting to only a “four-digit expense.”

Commuter Wells Brown from Flatbush was more upbeat, “You could see it much better and more clear,” he told NBC New York.

Rider Mari Moss praised its readability, saying to CBS News New York, “This would have been a dream for me when I was starting out my career… This is bigger, brighter and more understandable.”
