Bizum users hoping for quick and easy payments have been warned about a sneaky new scam doing the rounds in Spain. The scam could see money vanishing from user accounts before they even realise what’s happening.

Users across Spain have reported falling victim to a scam that targets sellers on online platforms. Cybercrooks are posing as interested buyers, offering to pay via Bizum – but there’s a catch.

The con in action

The scam works like this: the fraudsters contact a seller, claiming they want to buy an item and asking for a mobile number to send a Bizum payment. But instead of sending money, they actually send a request for money, disguised as a transaction the seller must ‘accept‘ due to supposed differences in their Bizum system.

Fall for it, and you won’t be receiving cash – you’ll be the one paying the scammer instead.

How to stay safe

Experts have urged users to be extra cautious and double-check any payment notifications before approving them. The golden rule? You never need to accept anything to receive a Bizum payment – it should land in your account automatically.

To avoid falling victim, sellers are advised to keep transactions within the second-hand platform itself, as these often have built-in security measures to protect both buyers and sellers.

And a word of warning – never share your phone number with unknown buyers without verifying their identity first.

What to do if you’re targeted

If you suspect you’ve been targeted or fallen victim to this scam, report it immediately to your bank or the Bizum support service.

With cybercriminals finding ever more cunning ways to part people from their cash, staying one step ahead is key. When it comes to digital payments, a moment of caution could save you a serious financial headache.
