Swedes boycott American brands in mass protest

Fed-up Swedes have launched a growing movement to boycott American products and services, taking a stand against recent US policy decisions that have sparked international controversy.

A string of online groups is urging shoppers to ditch big-name American brands in response to Washington’s move to halt support for Ukraine and slap new tariffs on Europe. The grassroots effort has gained serious momentum, with tens of thousands of Swedes backing the idea that consumer power might put pressure on the Trump administration.

Boycott boom gains traction

Facebook groups calling for a boycott of American-made goods are going ‘viral’. One such group, Boykot varer fra USA, has drawn nearly 67,000 members, while another, Bojkotta varor från USA, has amassed over 70,000 followers. The message they spread is clear: ‘stop buying American’.

Among the brands facing the cold shoulder are household names like Tesla, McDonald’s, Coca-Cola, Nike, and Levi’s. But the movement goes beyond just burgers and trainers – it also calls for a boycott of US-based digital services such as Netflix, Google, and Airbnb.

Critics have pointed out a contradiction in the movement – after all, its main platform is Facebook, owned by US tech giant Meta.

Whether the boycott will keep growing and eventually have any real impact on US policies remains to be seen, but what we’re seeing is that a growing number of Swedes are willing to vote with their wallets.
