A tense late-night stand-off near the White House ended in gunfire as Secret Service agents shot a man who allegedly pulled a firearm on officers.
The dramatic confrontation unfolded just after midnight on Sunday, March 9, when agents were alerted to a potential threat – a man reportedly travelling from Indiana with “suicidal intentions”.
Gunman confronts agents near White House
According to official reports by the Secret Service, officers tracked the suspect’s parked vehicle near the White House and soon spotted a man on foot matching the given description. As they approached, he allegedly pulled out a firearm, triggering what officials have called an ‘armed confrontation’.
In the ensuing clash, agents opened fire, striking the suspect, who was rushed to a local hospital. His current condition remains unknown.
Crucially, no Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident. The agency has not yet released the man’s identity or further details on his motives.
This is not the first time there has been an incident like this at the White House under Donald Trump’s tenure. Back in the summer of 2020, during Trump’s first term, a 51-year-old armed assailant received bullets to the torso while the US president talked to the press inside the West Wing. The suspect allegedly blaster shots towards the White House before running towards agents.
On that occasion, Trump was removed from the press conference room but he later returned to finish his briefing.
President Trump was not at the White House this time
This time, while the drama unfolded at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, President Trump was nowhere near the scene – he was spending the weekend at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.
It is not clear yet what the gunman’s plan was. But the investigation is ongoing.
