President Donald Trump has engaged in another war of words via his social media platform Truth Social.
This time taking aim at and threatening Hamas and the people of Gaza in what he is calling his last warning to them to release Israeli hostages. “I have just met with your former Hostages whose lives you have destroyed. This is your last warning!”
The message came after Trump met with former Israeli hostages who had been held by Hamas, including a 21-year-old American-Israeli who had been serving in the Israeli army. The White House released an official press release post meeting that said “The President listened intently to their heart breaking stories. The hostages thanked President Trump for his steadfast efforts to bring all of the hostages home”.
After their meeting Trump wrote a scathing and emotionally charged message on social media to Hamas “Release all of the Hostages now, not later, and immediately return all of the dead bodies of the people you murdered, or it is OVER for you. Only sick and twisted people keep bodies, and you are sick and twisted!”
Previous threats via social media messages like this one have had some affect in encouraging the release of hostages. However, these online intimidations are also threatening to derail the first direct talks the White House has had with Hamas since 1997. The channel of communication has been opened with the intention being able to secure the release of US-Israeli captives and to end the war in Gaza.
Trump threatens Hamas and the people of Gaza
Trumps threats were extended not only to the leaders of the Hamas group who he told to leave Gaza but to the people of Gaza, by which we can assume he means Palestinians. He said “to the People of Gaza: A beautiful Future awaits, but not if you hold Hostages. If you do, you are DEAD! Make a SMART decision. RELEASE THE HOSTAGES NOW, OR THERE WILL BE HELL TO PAY LATER!”
The Palestinian people may well feel they are already going through hell after Hamas’ actions on October 7 2023 resulted in their homes and lives being completely obliterated.
The Israeli-Gaza conflict has seen more than 48,000 Palestinians killed after the October 2023 attack by Hamas on Israel, where Hamas fighters killed 1,320 Israelis and took 251 hostages. These are the hostages that Trump is aiming to have released. In retaliation for the October attack Israel invaded Gaza and launched a military campaign which has killed tens of thousands and displaced 1.9million people.
The US threats come as Israel changes its demands for a truce
There has been a ceasefire in Gaza since January, however, the truce is in limbo after Israel blocked humanitarian aid to Gaza on March 2, going back on its armistice agreement, “Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu decided that, from this morning, all entry of goods and supplies into the Gaza Strip will be suspended,” said his office. They are using the blockade to try to force an extension of phase one of the truce agreement, it would mean the release of more hostages. However, they have also asked for the total demilitarisation of Gaza and the removal of Hamas before they are willing to contemplate phase two, the phase which should lead the two sides to peace.
