US President Donald Trump has posted a controversial AI-generated video on his Truth Social platform (February 26), showcasing an extravagant vision of Gaza transformed into a luxury destination.
The footage, set to a dance beat, has lyrics that say, “… no more fear, Trump Gaza is finally here.” It features golden statues of Trump, a Trump Gaza tower similar to his Las Vegas building, Dubai-style skyscrapers, beachfront resorts, and Elon Musk dancing under cash thrown in the air. The video has understandably caused a lot of speculation.
It also features bearded and bikini-clad belly dancers, which is surprising considering the President’s recent “there are only two genders” law.
Widespread criticism of Trump’s AI Gaza video from global leaders
The Palestinian Authority (PA) condemned the plan as a “serious violation of international law.” (Cited by CNN).
Gaza’s Hamas-run Government Media Office also denounced the video as “disgraceful,” with director-general Ismail Al-Thawabtah stating, “This video and its degrading content reflect the deeply rooted racist colonial mindset that seeks to distort reality and justify the occupation’s crimes.”
The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) dismissed it as a “clowning gimmick,” with executive committee member Wassel Abu Yousuf stating to CNN, “There will not be resorts or a Middle East Riviera… this is the land of our ancestors and parents.”
Trump justifies his Trump Gaza AI video
Following pushback, Trump told Fox News: “The way to do it is my plan. I think that’s the plan that really works. But I’m not forcing it. I’m just going to sit back and recommend it.”
A CNN poll conducted in mid-February found that only 13 per cent of Americans supported Trump’s plan for Gaza, with 58 per cent calling it a “bad thing.” The White House described the proposal as “out-of-the-box” – that’s certainly one way of describing it!
According to CNN, Arab leaders met in the Saudi capital Riyadh on February 21 for the first time to formulate a response to Trump’s plan for Gaza. The leaders are set to meet in Cairo on March 4 to discuss the plan and likely present it to Trump later on.
Meanwhile, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed interest in rebuilding Gaza. UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash told CNN, “We need a bold plan of reconstruction, but it must ensure we don’t go back to a situation of conflict.”
Egypt has reportedly suggested an alternative three-year plan costing $20 billion to rebuild Gaza.
