Billionaire tech tycoon Elon Musk has thrown his weight behind Spain’s hard-right party Vox, declaring they’ll be the next to take power. And his prophecy came hot on the heels of none other than Donald Trump singing the praises of Vox leader Santiago Abascal.

The ex-US president gave Abascal a glowing endorsement at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in America, where he called him a ‘great leader doing a great job’. Wasting no time, Musk reposted the clip with his own bold prediction: ‘Vox will win the next election.’

Musk and Abascal: a transatlantic bromance

The Tesla boss – who also heads up America’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) – met up with Abascal in Washington last Thursday, in what’s becoming a bit of a tradition for the pair. They last crossed paths in Italy in 2023 at a right-wing gathering hosted by Italy’s Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

This time, Abascal took the chance to personally thank Musk for ‘restoring freedom’ to social media platform X. Gushing over the billionaire’s stance against ‘woke censorship’, Abascal dubbed it a ‘historic reconquest of liberty’.

Brussels, bombs and backlashes

Never one to shy away from controversy, the Vox boss also used his CPAC platform to lay into the European Union, accusing ‘Brussels bureaucrats’ of enabling Putin’s war in Ukraine.

And he didn’t stop there – Abascal slammed Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, accusing him of bankrolling Russia’s bombs and doubling gas purchases from Moscow despite the ongoing conflict. He called out what he described as ‘the very people who gave Russia the green light to invade Ukraine’ and took a swipe at Sánchez’s upcoming visit to Kyiv, branding it a PR stunt as the war reaches its third anniversary.

With Trump’s blessing and Musk’s prediction, the question now is – will Abascal ride this wave of right-wing backing all the way to Spain’s top job? The battle lines for the next election are already being drawn.
